Office of Islamic Studies in Mental Health
The Office of Islamic Studies in Mental Health, situated on the campus of Tehran
Psychiatric Institute was established in 1987 in order to explore the
procurability of the principles of mental health in Islam and its relationship
with other disciplines such as psychology, psychiatry, and the affiliated
fields.
The major objectives stated in the constitution of the Office are as follows:
1. Expansion and quality improvement of Islamic researches in mental health
2. Cooperation in mental health surveys and researches related to Islamic
concepts and values.
During the last 15 years, in line with the spoken objectives, the Office has
implemented the following activities: organizing 105 monthly lectures about
Islam and mental health; conducting approximately 15 research projects with
various topics related to Islam and mental health, and collaborating with other
interest centers engaged in issues pertinent to Islam and mental health both in
Iran and abroad. Additionally, the guidence of the Office has been utilized in
various theses and dissertations linked to Islam and mental health, the role of
religion in mental health, and other relevant topics.
Presently situated in the venue of Tehran Psychiatric Institute, the Office is
administered by the effort and voluntary collaborations of the
Institute’s faculty members, researchers, students, and staff. Dr. Seyyed
Ahmad Va’ezi is the director of the Office.
